No mark in AI

Reversed short accent in FE (→GE1,EEC)

Accent in EEW & GE2 (→GE3)

Reversed long accent suggested by the editors

..

The authenticity of the reversed short accent of FE (→EEC) is questionable, since such marks are absent in Chopinesque autographs. Therefore, we are most probably dealing with a reversed mark, as it was assessed in GE2 (→GE3) and EEW, or with it having been shortened, which we consider more likely due to the ascending second motif – see the Concerto in E minor, Op. 11, II mov., bar 29, and the Prelude in G, Op. 28 No. 3, bars 17-18.

b. 60

Longer slur in AI

Shorter slur in FE (→EE,GE)

..

As in bar 56, we consider the ending of the slur reaching only the 2nd quaver in bar 60 to be an inaccuracy, and in the main text we lead the slur to the minim, as it is in AI. The range of the slur in GE is unclear, since its ending is very thin and hardly noticeable. The slur points at the minim stem; however, we take into account what can be actually seen in a score placed at a music stand.

Arpeggio sign in AI

Our suggestion

..

Taking into account the fact that in AI each third bar of the thematic eight-bar section (bars 3, 11, 71 and 79) always includes an arpeggio, while in the editions three out of four of these places, it seems almost certain that its absence here in FE resulted from an oversight. Due to the above, we give it directly in the main text.

The change of the short grace note to a long one in GE and EEC is a manner of the engravers of these editions – see the further note in this bar.

2 acciaccaturas in FE (→EEW)

2 appoggiaturas in GE & EEC

..

Chopin changed the mordents in bars 79 and 81 to short grace notes probably while creating [A]. The non-slashed grace notes in GE and EEC were arbitrarily inserted by the engravers, who did not use slashed grace notes in the entire Mazurka even once, and in the case of GE, the entire opus 63 is devoid of them.
